A suspected drug dealer has been killed in a reported gunfight with a Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) outfit in Dhaka.

The incident took place near Ashiyan Medical College in Khilkhet’s Barua area in the capital around 2:10am on Tuesday.

The deceased is Anwar Hossain, 34, accused in 18 drug related cases and a rape case, RAB 1 Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Kamruzzaman told Dhaka Tribune.

One RAB person was also injured in the incident, he added.

“Acting on a tipoff that a gang of drug traders were residing in the area, a RAB patrol team conducted a drive there,” said Kamruzzaman.

The drug traders opened fire on the RAB team as soon as they reached the spot, with them firing back and triggering a gunfight.

Anwar and a RAB member got injured in the conflict and were taken to Kurmitola Hospital, where the duty doctors declared Anwar dead.

RAB recovered four firearms, 34 bullets, and 1,950 yaba pills from the scene.

Anwar’s brother Abdus Samad told Dhaka tribune that Anwar left the house in Keraniganj at 7am on Monday for Kuril Bishwa Road when Raihan, a drug dealer in that area, called him.

“Later, we came to know about the shootout after a woman drug dealer’s husband, Kalam, informed us,” he added.

Samad said they live in Khilkhet’s Kuratoli area at their maternal grandmother's home.

We moved Anwar to Keraniganj from Khilkhet around six to seven months back and also counselled him not to take drugs anymore, said Samad.

Anwar was a cosmetics trader and has been taking drugs for the last 3 years. He also got involved in the drug trade through Raihan.
