Police have arrested Emon, 30, organizing secretary of Krishak League of Ward 31, in connection with the gangrape of two teenage girls in Badda.
The police have identified the two other alleged rapists as Kabir, 30, and Rob, 32, who are now on the run.
Yasin Gazi, inspector (operations) at Badda Police Station, while discussing the accused said: "They [perpetrators] are derailed youths from the area. The victims have identified one [Emon] whose photos were found on posters near the scene. We have another as Kabir who, according to locals, is a driver."
“We have identified the names based on conjecture. We are yet to learn more about them," he added.
Earlier on Sunday, two teenagers below the age of 15, were allegedly gangraped at around 1am, by three perpetrators in an area next to the DIT project in Badda.
Officer-in-Charge (OC), Mohammed Parvez Islam of Badda Police Station, said: “The two friends (rape survivors) went out of their house together at night. One of them went to meet her boyfriend, while the other one was escorting the friend. The girl who was meeting her boyfriend wanted to spend more time with the boy, but he insisted the girls go back.
“Upon the boy’s insistence, the girls started for their home but unfortunately lost their way. Taking advantage of the situation, the three perpetrators assured the girls they would take them home. Instead, they ended up taking the girls to a different place,” added Parvez.
Later, the victims were admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital’s One-stop Crisis Centre.
A case has been filed by the victims’ families and police officials are currently working to apprehend the other perpetrators.
Dhaka Tribune could not reach the local Krishak League leaders for comment, despite several attempts.
Separately, students from the school of two other gangraped teenagers from Kadamtali of Bashabo, demonstrated in front of the National Press Club.
They blocked the adjacent road yesterday afternoon, demanding the execution and hanging of the alleged rapists.
The two teenagers in this latter incident were allegedly violated in their home by three intruders on Sunday.
