Police have foiled a human chain on Sunday by Nagorik Parishad demanding the construction of a residential hall and the naming of a road after slain Buet student Abrar Fahad.
Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering at Buet, was beaten to death by leaders and activists of Chhatra League in his dormitory on Oct 6 last year after he criticized the government for a water-sharing deal with India on Facebook.
The Nagorik platform was barred from forming a human chain at the Raju Sculpture of Dhaka University, demanding construction of a new Buet hall named after Abrar Fahad.
The human chain also urged the authorities concerned to name the road between Dhaka University (DU) to Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) after Abrar.
The platform leaders gathered at Raju Sculpture at around 4pm, when law enforcementon asked them to leave the spot.
Nilkhet police outpost in-charge Sub-Inspector Roich Uddin said they asked the protesters to shift the venue to the National Press Club as the book fair is underway on the campus.
Nagorik Parishad Convener Mohammad Shamsuddin however claimed that the police prevented their planned event from happening regardless of the circumstances.
He said: "Earlier, we wanted to hold protest events on border killings, Kashmir issues, and a black flag rally on the decision of Sushma Swaraj's visit to Bangladesh, and all of them were thwarted."
Earlier on September 4, police prevented a rally by the same platform from forming a human chain in Dhaka, protesting killings in the state of Kashmir and Gujrat in India.
