Bangladesh closes all educational institutions till March 31

It is an effort to stem the spread of coronavirus in Bangladesh

All educational institutions under the Ministry of Education across Bangladesh will be shut from March 18 till 31, in an effort to stem the spread of coronavirus in the country.

Deputy Minister for Education, Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune on Monday.

Earlier in the day,  Dhaka University (DU) administration suspended all classes and examinations from March 18 till 28 in an effort to stem the spread of coronavirus in Bangladesh.

Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) recommended the university authorities "shutdown the university temporarily or announce summer vacation early after rescheduling," and placed a memorandum to that effect with the vice chancellor on Sunday morning.

Till date, eight cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Bangladesh. Of them, three people were released upon recovery, as of IEDCR on Monday.

Educational institutions closed in other countries

Meanwhile, India's Delhi, West Bengal, and Goa announced that all educational institutes would remain shut till the end of March as part of measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

Indonesia's capital city Jakarta would also close all schools, and has ordered remote teaching for at least two weeks starting this week to curb the spread of the coronavirus, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said.

The fast spreading coronavirus, declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), has claimed more than 6,500 lives and infected around 170,000 people across the globe, according to worldometers.
