Dhaka North City Corporation's newly-elected Mayor Atiqul Islam has urged homeowners of Dhaka to waive rents in the wake of the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

Atiqul Islam was speaking to Bangla Tribune on Tuesday.

He urged the landlords who have rented homes to people who live in slums and low-income people to exempt their rents in the current situation.

Atiqul said: “At this moment especially, slum dwellers are in serious trouble. They, too, live in slums through paying rent. So I would urge homeowners to exempt their rent for at least a month. I will urge all landlords to look into their hearts and not take rent from them. I know that this will make li difficult for the landlords but this is time for people to stand beside each other.”

The mayor also said: “Let's all come together. Now is the right time to show our humanity.”

When asked whether less rent should be taken from low-income bracket people, Atiqul said:"Of course, I also urge the landlords to look into this matter seriously. If they can waive the rent, it will benefit many. We want everyone in society to come forward with generosity during this crisis."
