Police have arrested five individuals for reportedly killing a caretaker of an under construction building in Dhaka’s Mirpur.
The arrested, Kawsar, Nayan, Afaz, Ananta and Ashiqul, are construction labourers who were working at the building where the deceased, Anwar Hossain, 55, was a caretaker.
They were arrested during different drives of the police in the capital and areas adjacent to it on Saturday.
Assistant Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Tejgaon zone, Md Mahmud Khan, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Monday.
Mahmud said: “The suspects have given their confessional statements before the court.”
According to police, all the five arrested decided to steal construction materials from the building site as they did not get their arrears paid and they wanted to return to their village homes due to the lack of work amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“Around 10 pm on April 13, as per their plan, the five workers went inside the building and tied Anwar’s hands, legs, and mouth. Anwar then was taken to the eighth floor of the building. He then died of suffocation as his whole face was tightly wrapped so that he couldn’t make any noise.
“The culprits then panicked realizing that Anwar is dead. In a bid to escape from the crime scene as soon as possible, they decided not to steal anything except the caretaker’s phone,” Mahmud said.
“Later on April 15, the owner of the building, after being notified by Anwar’s family that he wasn’t answering his phone since the day of the incident, went to the construction site and found the victim’s body on the eighth floor of the building.
“Following which we were informed and started our investigation,” he added.
