'This nursing home had basically been authorized for providing care to pregnant women'
A mobile court has fined and jailed four people for selling and stockpiling unauthorized oxygen cylinders amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-3 Executive Magistrate Palash Kumar Basu confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
He said: “Gulshan-2 based nursing home ‘Maisha Care Limited’ Managing Director Mohibul Islam, and its Manager Shahadat Habib, have been penalised for selling and stockpiling unauthorized oxygen cylinders.”
“They were also selling these cylinders at a very high price to those who are in dire need of oxygen due to coronavirus. Mohibul was sentenced to a year in jail whereas Shahadat was fined Tk4 lakh,” he added.
He said: “This nursing home had basically been authorized for providing care to pregnant women.
“But as regular hospitals are finding it difficult to handle the intense flow of patients during this outbreak, the authorities here decided to lie to people that they had ICU facilities and started selling unauthorized oxygen cylinders, which they are clearly not allowed to do.”
“As many as 50 unauthorized oxygen cylinders have been seized from the spot,” he added.
“Meanwhile, two other individuals, Imam Hossain Shakil, owner of SSK Enterprise, and Bakul Kumar, owner of a barber shop, were fined Tk1 lakh and Tk2 lakh respectively for the same crime,” the magistrate said.
During the RAB raids, three officials from the Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDAP) were also present.
