The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested two individuals for allegedly snatching motorcycles and other valuables while posing as passengers of ride-sharing platforms.
The arrestees have been identified as Imran Hossain and Masum Mollah.
They were arrested from Dhaka’s Rampura area and Bagerhat district on Tuesday night.
DB also recovered a motorcycle and four knives from their possession.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, AKM Hafiz Akhter, an additional commissioner at DB of DMP, said: “Nowadays people, instead of using the ride-sharing apps, tend to hire motorcycles for a fixed fare. And muggers take advantage of this and by posing as passengers, they hire motorcycles on contractual fairs.
“They then take the ride-share provider to a silent and dark place. Then, with the help of an associate who would be waiting at the preselected destination, the muggers snatch away the ride-share provider’s motorcycle and other valuables.”
“We arrested the two after a victim lodged a complaint with us.
“It is very difficult to trace such incidents as people sometimes don’t use the ride-sharing apps which have all the relevant information to identify someone,” he added.
He said: “The suspects have confessed to their crimes.”
