Nur was detained a day after he was enlisted as an accused in a rape case filed by a Dhaka University student

Nurul Haque Nur, former vice president of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu), was released from police custody hours after he was detained for vandalism.

Nur was detained at around 8:30pm on Monday, SM Shamim, assistant commissioner of the Ramna zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), told Dhaka Tribune.

Six other people were detained along with Nur for attacking police and vandalizing a police vehicle near Matsya Bhaban - the Department of Fisheries building - in Kakrail, Dhaka, the ACP said.

Several policemen were injured in the scuffle, he added.

Nur and the six others were questioned for over an hour, and then they signed an undertaking, Mahbub Alam, joint commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) of DMP, told Dhaka Tribune.

"We took them into custody for disrupting law and order. But later we released them after questioning," he added.

They were released at around 12:45am on Tuesday.

Earlier on Sunday night, a student of Dhaka University filed a rape case with Lalbagh police station, accusing Nur and five others.

According to the case details, Nur and four others aided Hasan Al Mamun, convener of Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council, in committing the rape, Lalbagh police station OC KM Ashraf Uddin said.

Former Ducsu vice president Nurul Haque Nur and his fellow members of Bangladesh Students' Rights Council bring out a procession in Dhaka, in protest of false allegations brought against Nur and others, on Monday, September 21, 2020 | Rajib Dhar/Dhaka TribuneSpeaking to Dhaka Tribune, Ramna police station OC Monirul Islam said Nur and his associates brought out a procession on Monday evening under the banner of his organization, Bangladesh Students' Rights Council.

They brought out the procession in protest against the "false" cases filed against them, Boni Adam, an eyewitness, told Dhaka Tribune.

Ramna OC Monirul said that by marching on the road, Nur and his followers had disrupted traffic near the Matsya Bhaban intersection, which prompted the police to go into action to stop them.

But Nur and his associates retaliated by attacking the policemen, the OC said, adding that they had also vandalized a police vehicle.

After the questioning, Detective Branch officials took Nur and another detainee named Sohrab to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for check-up.

"Four people, including Nur and DB officials, came into the hospital," said Dr Mohammed Alauddin, resident surgeon at DMCH emergency department. "We took X-rays of Nur's chest, hip and some other places. The other person had slight injury in his head, so he was checked by the department of neurosurgery."

No issues were found with their health, the doctor said.

At around 11:40pm, the detectives escorted Nur and Sohrab out of the DMCH.

All seven detainees were released from police custody at around 12:45am on Tuesday.

After he was released, Nur refuted the allegation of aiding in a rape against him.

"It is a false accusation," he told reporters. "I am innocent."

When asked if the detention was linked to the rape case filed against Nur, Monirul said: "We apprehended him for disrupting traffic, obstructing police and attacking on-duty policemen."

When asked the same question, DB Joint Commissioner Mahbub Alam said that the matter was under the jurisdiction of Lalbagh police.
