State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Md Mahbub Ali has said that no compromise should be made to ensure safety and security in airports across the country.

“No compromise should be made to ensure safety and security of airports and passengers.  Everyone working at the airport should always be ready to prevent and deal with any kind of security incident. Those who try to disrupt safety and security will not be spared,” said the minister.

He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of "Full Scale Airport Emergency Exercise-2020" which took place at the extended section of international lounge in Osmani International Airport in Sylhet on Tuesday.

“Effective steps have been taken at the direction of Hon'ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to improve the quality of passenger service at airports and prevent any kind of accidents.  Security has been beefed up at all airports across the country.  All modern security equipment including fire alarm systems, dual view scanning machines, ETDs, and under-vehicles scanning systems have already been installed at Sylhet Osmani International Airport to ensure security and safety,” he said.

The state minister added that major development works are underway in all international and domestic airports of the country under the leadership and supervision of the prime minister.

He said the Osmani International Airport is also undergoing work for expansion that will reportedly cost Tk2,760 crore.

The first phase, which includes strengthening of runways and installation of the airfield ground lighting system, costing Tk451.96 crore, is nearing completion.

The second phase of work was inaugurated by the prime minister on October 1.  Under this phase, a new modern terminal building, cargo building, control tower, administrative building, maintenance building, apron, taxiway and utility station will be constructed at the cost of Tk2,309 crore.

“After the completion of this work, Osmani International Airport will be a well-equipped modern airport,” said Mahbub Ali.

“The international lounge of the airport was expanded at a cost of around Tk6 crore, keeping in mind the needs of the passengers. From this spacious lounge people can directly see take-off and landing of aircraft, which will allow them to enjoy their time while waiting for their flights,” said the minister.

Mahbub Ali further said that security, passenger service, and cargo handling procedures are being upgraded to meet international standards.

Chairman of Bangladesh Civil Aviation Authority Air Vice Marshal Md Mofidur Rahman, member (Operations & Planning) Md Khalid Hossain, DIG Sylhet Range Mofiz Uddin Ahmed, President of  Sylhet City Awami League Mashuk Uddin Ahmed, among others, spoke on the occasion.
