Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) has claimed that an Indian drug ring was behind the consignment of amphetamines worth Tk24.5 crore which was seized from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) on September 9.

They allegedly used Bangladesh as a route to smuggle it to other countries. The consignment was brought into the country from India via Benapole border. Later, they tried to use the airport and international courier services to smuggle the powder out of the country.

DNC Director General (DG) Md Ahsanul Jabber made the statements at DNC’s headquarter in Dhaka’s Segunbagicha on Wednesday after arresting seven people including one of the ring leaders from different areas of Dhaka’s at various times.

He said they also identified the Indian and Australian ring and notified Interpol to arrest them.

DNC also instructed international courier service authorities to install scanning machines. They are also planning to deploy a dog squad at HSIA which will work in coordination with other agencies to detect such smuggling consignments, the DNC DG added.

He said six people were detained after the confiscation of amphetamine consignment on September 9. Later, DNC arrested another seven people including "mastermind" Abul Kalam Azad alias Bunty, a chemical businessman from Dhaka’s Mitford area.

The other six arrestees are – Rezaul Haque Bablu, Junaid Ibne Siddiqui, Nazrul Islam, Babul Mazumder, Md Mazed, and Bappi.

During primary interrogation, it was revealed that Bunty had originally sold the amphetamine to Junaid and Nazrul. Bunty knew them through Deen Islam and Saiful. They are continuing their operation to arrest the two, the DNC chief said.

During interrogation, Bunty said he used to collect amphetamines through Indian chemical trader Habib Master. Habib Master's associate Rajkhan used to cross the border and deliver consignments to him in Dhaka through various couriers including Dreamland and Karatoa, he said.

Later, they made compartments in the cartons with a layer of carbon in a special way and smuggled their contrabands in the boxes of garment products from Dhaka, he further disclosed.

Replying to a question, the DNC DG said, during the interrogation they also learned that the ring had earlier smuggled several consignments in the same manner. At this time, the total number of smuggled consignments remain unknown. However, the perpetrators made a huge amount of money through such activities.
