A domestic help was shouting from the window of a flat and some locals thought it was a case of torture
A clash between police and an angry local mob took place in Dhaka’s Uttara area over a rumour that a domestic help was being tortured.
The chase-counter-chase and hurling of brickbats took place on a road in Sector No 4 on Wednesday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Uttara Division Assistant Commissioner Khandaker Rezaul Hasan said the 20-year-old domestic help had Covid-19 and was in isolation for days, which might have caused her discomfort.
She was shouting from the window of a flat in a building on that road and some locals thought it was a case of torture on the domestic help.
Later, more than 100 people gathered and attacked the building in a bid to rescue the girl and police had to intervene, Rezaul said.
She was later handed over to her guardians, he added.
The situation was brought under control soon, while additional police were deployed to avoid any untoward incidents, he said.
