Update : 18 Oct 2020, 01:08 PM

The High Court has rejected a writ petition that challenged the decision of Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) to reappoint its current Managing Director Taqsem A Khan for the next three years.

The bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order on Sunday, confirmed Advocate Tanvir Ahmed.

Earlier on September 24, Tanvir filed the writ on behalf of former additional chief engineer of the Bangladesh Water Development Board Khandaker Manzur Murshid.

On September 19, the board of Dhaka Wasa, in a virtual meeting, made the recommendation to reappoint Taqsem as its managing director.

The recommendation to reappoint him came five days after he was rebuked by the High Court for his negligence in disconnecting sewerage lines in the Buriganga River.

Meanwhile, the government reappointed Taqsem as the Dhaka Wasa managing director on October 1, despite allegations of corruption against him. He has been serving the post since 2009.

At a press conference held at Dhaka Wasa headquarters in Karwan Bazar on Friday, he said it is his work that motivated the government to reappoint him.

He also alleged that a vested quarter was attempting to replace him.

Engineer Waliullah Sikder, a member of Dhaka Wasa board, claimed that he was opposed to the proposal for Taqsem's reappointment.

He raised the corruption issue relating to Taqsem and demanded the formation of a probe committee to investigate the charges of corruption.

On July 21, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) raised question over repeated reappointment of an officer for the same post quoting media and information from other sources that rules and regulations have been violated on each occasion of renewing his appointment.
