Arson attack: 32 held, 14 cases so far

Awami League and BNP traded blames over the arson attack on the day of the by-polls

Police so far have arrested 32 people in connection with torching government vehicles and public transports in Dhaka when Dhaka 18 constituency went to the by-polls on Thursday.

They were arrested by police personnel from different police stations and detective branch officials, and were shown arrested in 14 cases filed in this connection.

Among them, 28 were remanded in different terms by court.

Md Walid Hossain, deputy commissioner (Media and Public Relations Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police disclosed the matter on Saturday afternoon.

“Over 200 people have been made accused in 14 cases filed with seven police stations on torching of government transport and public transports in Dhaka on Thursday. Among them, 32 were arrested,” he said.

Most of these cases were filed under the penal code and sabotage under the Special Powers Act and Explosives Substance Act.

The DMP deputy commissioner claimed that most of the people arrested were followers of a specific political party, without naming the said party.

He said that police are trying to identify the suspects analyzing CCTV footage and the drive to nab criminals is ongoing.

4 more cases filed

Four more cases were filed Saturday with different police stations in connection with torching nine buses in the capital on Thursday. 

One case was filed with Turag police station and Airport police station while two cases with Uttara East police station on Thursday and Friday. 

Thirty three people were named as accused in the case filed under the Explosive Substances Act with Turag police station while 28 others in the case filed with Airport police station under the same act. And, 28 people and 19 people were made accused in the two cases each filed with Uttara East police station. 

Earlier on Friday, nine cases were filed with different police stations in the capital on Friday for arson attacks on as many vehicles, including two government staff buses and a BRTC double-decker bus.

Two cases were filed each at Motijheel, Shahbagh and Paltan police stations. 

The rest three were filed at Bongshal, Bhatar and Kalabagn police stations, said DMP DC (media) Walid Hossain.

On Thursday, nine vehicles were torched at separate places of the capital.

All the buses were torched in different parts of the city including Madhumita Cinema hall arae, Pir Yamini Market area, Katabon area in Shahbagh, Shahjahanpur in Khilgaon, in the Secretariat area, at Naya Bazar area and at Coca-Cola crossing of Bhatara area. 

Several units of firefighters extinguished the flames.
