Teen’s body found near Central Shaheed Minar, 1 held

Police said it could be a case of rape and murder but will confirm after receiving the medical reports

The body of a teenager has been found near Central Shaheed Minar, inside the Dhaka University campus, in the capiital.

The deceased is Mim, 16, daughter of Sundari Begum from Kamrangichar Jhauchor area. She sold flowers in Shahbagh.

Mim’s friends found her in an unconscious state and rushed her to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where on-duty doctors declared her dead at 3.15am on Sunday.

DMCH police outpost Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Abdul Khan confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune and said the body has been kept in the hospital’s morgue for autopsy.

“A black mark has been found on the neck of the body,” he added.

Mamun-or-Rashid, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh police station, told this newspaper that Mim was murdered by a homeless person.

He has been identified as Abul Khayer, 35.

"Shahbagh police arrested the murderer Khayer who primarily confessed to the crime and is now under our custody," said the OC.

"It could be a case of rape and murder. We can confirm the details after receiving the medical reports," he added.
