Woman, granddaughter killed in Dhaka road accident

The accident left the woman’s son and another granddaughter injured

Two passengers of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw have been killed and two others injured after a truck hit the three wheeler in Dhaka’s Rupnagar area.

The deceased are Salma Begum, 55, and her granddaughter Rinita, 12. 

The accident which happened around 5:30am on Monday left Salma’s son Mohamad Salek, 32, and another granddaughter Riya, 14, injured.

Salma’s daughter Shiuli Begum said: “My mother came from Lalmonirhat a week ago to visit my father in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur. Today (Monday) she was coming to my place in Ashulia with my brother and two nieces when the truck hit their CNG, leaving all of them injured.

“They were rushed to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital where my niece Rinita was declared dead while my brother and other niece Riya are still undergoing treatment there.

“My mother was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where she died around midday while undergoing treatment,” she added.

DMCH police outpost Inspector Md Bachchu Mia said the body has been kept in the hospital’s morgue for autopsy.

The police station concerned has been reported about the accident, he added.

Increase in road accidents

At least 484 people were killed and 673 injured in 427 road accidents across Bangladesh in January this year, marking an alarming rise in such incidents.

According to the Road Safety Foundation (RSF), the accident rate rose by 25.58% and fatalities by 8.76% last month compared to the same time last year.

At least 445 lives were lost in 340 road accidents in January 2020.

Meanwhile, data gathered by Bangladesh Passengers’ Welfare Association said at least 6,686 people lost their lives and 8,600 were injured in a total of 4,891 road accidents in 2020.
