Update : 10 Mar 2021, 04:01 PM

DMP Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam has tested positive for Covid-19.

The DMP Commissioner was admitted to the Central Police Hospital (CPH) in Rajarbagh on Saturday as he fell sick.

Later he was found positive for Covid-19 after a medical test.

Contacted, DMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) (Media) Iftekhairul Islam, said: “The commissioner is now out of danger and has sought prayers from all for his early recovery.”

The DMP boss had received his first of the two jabs of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine on February 7, the day Bangladesh launched its mass inoculation drive, at the CPH.

He has tested positive for the deadly virus more than a month after he was inoculated.

"After feeling discomfort, he was admitted to the CPH. It will be wrong if anyone thinks that he fell sick due to the vaccine as more than a month has already passed since he was immunized," Iftekhairul added.

Earlier last month, Disaster Management and Relief Ministry Secretary Md Mohsin got infected with Covid-19, 12 days after getting vaccinated.

At that time, Additional Director General of Directorate General of Health Services Prof Dr Nasima Sultana said a single dose of the vaccine would not be completely effective against the disease. Two doses are required.

Bangladesh saw a rise in its daily Covid-19 in cases in the last 24 hours till Tuesday morning as the country registered 912 new cases.

A total of 13 coronavirus deaths and 912 fresh cases were reported during the period, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

With the latest figure, the Covid-19 fatalities climbed to 8,489 and total infections to 552,087, the DGHS said in a handout.

Besides, it said, 1,229 people recovered from the virus infections during the period. So far, 505,349 patients –91.46% – have recovered.

Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18.

Meanwhile, the daily infection rate jumped to 5.13% from 4.98% on Monday. However, the mortality rate remained unchanged at 1.54% for the past few weeks, the DGHS said.

Authorities have so far tested 4,180,938 samples, including 17,973 in the past 24 hours.
