She was on her way to work
A 50-year-old woman has died after muggers in a car pulled her off the rickshaw she was riding in an attempt to snatch her bag in Motijheel, Dhaka, police and the victim’s relatives said.
The deceased is Sunita Rani Das, a resident of Rishipara at Gopibagh who used to work as a cleaner at a Buddhist monastery near Bashabo. She was the wife of Sujan Das from Tangail's Gopalpur upazila and the mother of three children.
Her son Raju Das said Sunita and her nephew Sanjit Das were heading to their workplaces on the rickshaw around 6am on Wednesday. When they reached the BRTC Bus Depot area, a private car began chasing them.
“At one stage, the muggers sitting inside the car pulled my mother’s bag, causing her to fall off the rickshaw and become seriously injured,” Raju said. Sanjit sustained minor injuries.
Sunita was first rushed to Mugda General Hospital, then to a private hospital before finally arriving at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where she succumbed to her injuries in the afternoon, said Bachchu Miah, inspector at DMCH police outpost.
Motijheel police station Officer-in-Charge Yasir Arafat told the media that police are on the hunt for the muggers.
Several similar muggings have taken place in Mohammadpur recently (near the Residential Model College and Japan Garden City on Ring Road, among parts of Dhaka city), according to the complaints of netizens.
On February 29 last year, a woman died after falling victim to a similar mugging. She too fell from a rickshaw when muggers tried to snatch her bag on Biswa Road in Dhaka’s Mugda area. #
