Health Ministry official who filed case against Rozina Islam transferred

She has been sued for theft and photographing of important official documents

Health Ministry Deputy Secretary Sibbir Ahmed Osmani, who filed the controversial case against Prothom Alo Senior Correspondent Rozina Islam on Monday night, has been transferred to another branch of the ministry.

On Tuesday, the ministry issued an office order signed by Health Services Division Deputy Secretary Sharmin Akter Jahan in this regard with retrospective effect on Monday.

The official has been transferred to public health branch – 2 from branch – 1, according to the order, which also mentions transfer of five others to other branches.

Health Ministry officials turned Islam over to police on Monday after confining her at the office of Md Saiful Islam Bhuiyan, the personal secretary to the Health Services Division secretary, for five hours, and filed a complaint seeking investigation.

She was later sued under the colonial-era Official Secrets Act and the Penal Code for “theft and photographing” of important official documents linked to vaccine purchase and collection.

On Tuesday, a Dhaka court turned down police’s appeal to quiz Islam in custody for five days. The renowned journalist will be detained in jail until the next hearing on her bail petition on Thursday.
