Two suspected armed robbers have been killed in Dhaka in what law enforcement officials described as a “gunfight.”
The incident took place at the capital’s Khilkhet in the early hours of Tuesday, Police have identified the deceased as Enamul, 36, and Russell, 30, confirmed Detective Branch (DB) Gulshan division Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Golam Saqlain.
According to DB and Khilkhet police, miscreants on a CNG-run autorickshaw opened fire on a joint team of law enforcement officials, sometime between 2am and 2.30am.
“We also arrested another two members of the robbery ring from the scene, identified as Nayan and Yamin. They have been accused in three cases filed with Khilkhet police station and the court granted three-day remand of both,” the DB ADC told this newspaper.
“The perpetrators usually committed crimes in streets on CNG-run autorickshaws, which we seized at the end of the gunfight,” he added.
A pistol, magazine loaded with two bullets, a knife, ointment tubes, nine mobile phones, 18 yaba pills and Tk5,000 were seized from the suspects, according to police.
“Upon receiving information, one of our teams chased them and another team barred their vehicle. They could not flee and clashed with law enforcement officials on the Khilkhet flyover,” Golam Saqlain said.
“As they could not manage to escape, they opened fire on the law enforcement officals. Enamul and Russell sustained gunshot wounds in the exchange of fire,” he added.
They were taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the doctors declared them dead, according to Khilkhet police station.
“The team is gang of professional killers, not locals of Dhaka. The area adjacent to where we caught them was a sanctuary for them,” Saqlain further said.
Police said the arrestees admitted to being involved in picking up passengers in the autorickshaw and robbing them.
