Three students, arrested on charges of being in possession of 30 brownies spiked with cannabis, have been placed on a two-day remand each in a case filed with Mohammadpur police station.

The remand order was issued on Thursday, confirmed General Recording Officer of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court Monirul Islam.

Earlier, the Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Kafil Wara Rafid, CSE student at American International University-Bangladesh, Kazi Risalat Hossain, ACCA qualification aspirant, and Saiful Islam Saif, fine arts student at the University of Development Alternative from Dhaka’s Mohammadpur and Paltan areas on Wednesday evening.

The ring was tracked down on the basis of information gleaned from one of the individuals arrested in connection with the selling of the psychedelic drug LSD a few days ago, according to DB Deputy Commissioner (Ramna zone) HM Azimul Haque.

“They made the confection by boiling cannabis with oil and butter,” the police official said.

“The three arrestees were only consumers of cannabis brownies once, but later became involved in the drug business after noticing the demand for them. It is very expensive and usually only consumed by youths belonging to affluent families. It is very popular at parties,” he added.

The three arrested on Wednesday were from wealthy families as well, he said, adding: “These kinds of brownies are sold at Tk3,000-Tk10,000 and the intoxication induced by eating them lasts for up to a week.”

Police sources said the three arrestees, during primary interrogation, had admitted to being drug addicts and told the law enforcement agency that they had learnt the process of baking cannabis brownies on YouTube.

They told police that they used to sell them exclusively to close friends at first but later started to put them up for sale on Facebook groups, which were sometimes dispatched through deliverymen.
