Two people were killed as a transformer exploded near Islambagh Madina Petrol Pump in Dhaka's Chawkbazar area on Wednesday night.

The deceased were identified as Md Maruf, 17, an employee of a shop, and truck owner Hero, 40.

Three people were also injured in the explosion. Two of them are Sarwar, 20, and Sohag, 30, Chawkbazar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Abdul Qayyum confirmed to Dhaka Tribune.

The transformer exploded during heavy showers when a truck was heading towards Sowari Ghat, injuring five people. The injured were first taken to Mitford Hospital.

Later, three of them were taken to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, where doctors declared Maruf dead at midnight.

Truck owner Hero died on Thursday morning while undergoing treatment at a private hospital at Shyamoli.

Dr Partha Shankar Paul, a resident physician at Sheikh Hasina National Burn Institute, said Sarwar's condition is critical as 48% of his body was burnt in the blast.
