Banani DOHS not to allow dogs without owners

The Banani DOHS authorities have issued guidelines for residents willing to adopt dogs, in the wake of alleged attacks on children and house helps in recent times.

In a notice issued on Wednesday, the Banani DOHS Porishod said after August 15, pet dogs would not be allowed to stay outside homes without tokens, belts and their owners. The move has raised concerns among animal lovers.

All dogs must be vaccinated, and if they cause harm to anyone the owners would pay the costs, the notice says.

A dog will be seized by the Cantonment Board and relocated if found without the designated token or any neighbor files a complaint.

The Cantonment Board will issue the tokens at a cost of Tk500 for each dog, reads the notice signed by Col (retd) Asiful Hossain, member admin of the Banani DOHS Porishod.

The notice says that the decisions had been reached in the interest of the safety of residents, especially children, in the wake of several complaints of stray dogs attacking some residents of the area being made.

Animal rights activists and several residents who feed the stray dogs regularly expressed their concerns over the issuance of the notice, saying that the authorities had earlier tried to cull stray dogs several months back.

They said that all the dogs of the area had been vaccinated and recently neutering them had begun in order to control the number of dogs.
