The robbers target people who carry huge sums of money from money exchanges, says DB chief
The Detective Branch (DB) of police has arrested three suspected members of a robber gang who were involved in snatching at least Tk85 lakh - in the span of a week - from Mouchak flyover of Dhaka and in Narayanganj’s Siddhirganj.
DB chief AKM Hafiz Akter, who is also additional commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), was speaking to journalists at the DMP media centre on Thursday.
The arrestees are Jalil Molla, Riaz and Dipu. DB police arrested them from different areas in Dhaka, Savar and Jessore on Wednesday, in connection with two cases filed with Ramna and Siddhirganj police station.
The DB official said the robbers targeted people carrying huge sums of money from money exchanges. They are members of a sophisticated and organized crime gang who also use expensive revolvers, worth Tk12 lakh each.
“We are searching for more members of the ring. The robbers have invested the money in procuring permanent assets for themselves immediately after the robberies. Jalil was sued in at least four cases of robbery and one other crime at least once,” replied AKM Hafiz while responding to a query.
Two revolvers, 50 rounds of bullets, two motorcycles and Tk1 lakh in cash were seized from their possession.
A case has been filed at Kotwali police station over the seizure of arms, said the official.
On August 28, a businessman left Nihon Money Exchange in Motijheel in a car with Tk60 lakh. Six people, including the arrestees, followed his car via motorcycle and stopped the car on the Mouchak flyover at around 1:20pm.
They fired two blank rounds and smashed a glass window with a hammer, and fled with the bag full of money. A case was filed the next day with Ramna police.
A week later, on September 4, another businessman - carrying Tk25 lakh in a bag from Motijheel - was stalked by the members of the gang on 3 motorcycles. As soon as he reached Sanarpar area in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, at around 01:50pm, the gang stopped him and snatched the money, Hafiz said.
A pedestrian was shot by the robbers as he came forward to rescue the man. A case was filed later in this regard with Siddhirganj police station.
Following the filing of the case, the Ramna Zonal Team of the DB Ramna Division under DMP started investigating the two incidents of robbery.
Hafiz also said: “They usually opt for robberies on weekends, especially Saturdays. A group of the professional gang targets businessmen who carry large sums of money from money exchanges. Information on the targeted persons is provided to another group, which follows them on motorcycles. When the targets reach a convenient place, the gang opens fire to create panic and take them hostage at gunpoint, snatch valuables and money and flee the scene.”
The operation on Wednesday was led by Mishu Biswas, additional deputy commissioner of police, Ramna Zonal Team, under the supervision of HM Azimul Haque, deputy commissioner of police, DB Ramna Division.
