Two cases have been filed against her under the Digital Security Act and the Narcotics Control Act

Nusrat Shahreen Raka, sister of controversial expatriate journalist Kanak Sarwar, has been placed on a five-day remand in connection with two cases filed under the Digital Security Act and the Narcotics Control Act.

Two metropolitan magistrates of the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court granted the remand in separate orders on Wednesday.

Badrul Millat, sub inspector (SI) of Uttara West police station and the investigating officer in the case, produced Raka before the court with a seven-day remand prayer in the case under the Digital Security Act.

Public Prosecutor Abdullah Abu stood for the state with the remand prayer, while the defence counsel submitted a petition seeking bail along with cancellation of the remand plea.

After hearing both sides, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Bakar Siddique rejected the defence plea and placed her on a three-day remand for quizzing.

The same investigating officer also applied for a seven-day remand of Nusrat Shahreen Raka in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act with Uttara West Police Station.

On behalf of the accused, defence counsel submitted a petition seeking bail along with cancellation of the remand prayer in this case as well.

Following the hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nivana Khair Jessy granted a two-day remand.

Nusrat Shahreen Raka, 38, sister of controversial expatriate journalist Kanak Sarwar, was arrested in Uttara in Dhaka early on Tuesday on charges of spreading anti-state propaganda.

RAB members seized a mobile phone set with anti-state contents, a passport, and some Ice or Crystal Meth, an illegal drug, from her possession during the arrest.

Later, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) filed two cases against Raka under the Digital Security Act and Narcotics Act.

During primary interrogation by RAB, Raka confessed that she was an active member of a group involved in anti-state propaganda, said a RAB press release.

Raka used to spread false, misleading and defamatory information about the state and important personalities of the state through social media to destabilize the country, according to RAB.

According to her statement, several members of the group are involved in various  anti-state propaganda from abroad through social media.

She also said she used to assist her brother Kanak and other similar-minded people in such activities.

Earlier, in December 2020, the High Court directed the government to immediately block all digital portals, including Facebook and YouTube channel, of Kanak Sarwar, a senior journalist who used to work for the private TV channel ETV, over his dissemination of "anti-state distorted content" through the platforms.
