DU appoints lecturers without Master’s degree
The recruitment was finalised at a meeting of the university Syndicate on Monday, sources told the Dhaka Tribune. The three lecturers without the master's degree are Tanvir Ahmed, Nurus Sakib and Sajib Barua. Asked about their recruitment, DU Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, who led the meeting on Monday, said the three were currently studying at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet). “Their appointment at Dhaka University will be made permanent once they complete their Master's,” he told the Dhaka Tribune. The Syndicate had finalised recruitment of a total of nine lecturers, the six other being Dr M Shahruzzaman, Shirazur Rahman, Shanta Biswas, Minhazul Islam, Sazedul Islam and Saikat Chandra Dey. Sources further said the department had published a notice seeking applications for four vacant posts. Aspiring candidates were required to have first class Bachelor's and Master's degrees. But the university authority relaxed the job requirement and recruited three lecturers who have yet to attain their Master's degrees, said some of the members of the selection committee. They also recruited nine teachers when the department needed only four. Dr Md Ruhul Amin, chairman of the department, said the university Syndicate recruited the teachers without consulting with the department or the Coordination and Development Committee of the university, which is the standard procedure. He declined to say anything further on this matter, but when asked about the recruitment of nine teachers against four vacancies, he said the university Syndicate can make such decision if it sees fit. Asked why the department was not consulted regarding the recruitment, VC Arefin Siddique said: “Sometimes some departments delay the recruitment process in order to appoint their favourite students as teachers. Since the department of applied chemistry and chemical engineering urgently needed teachers, we expedited the process.” Teachers and students of Dhaka University have expressed deep concern over the recruitment, saying that it may harm the quality of education. “All the teachers at this university must have at least Master's degree, as per the university regulations,” said a teacher, requesting anonymity.
