Inter School and College Science Festival kicks off in Dhaka
The three-day long event is organised by the BMARPC Science Club in collaboration with University of Liberal Arts (ULAB) to foster scientific interest among school and college students. BMARPC Principal Lt Col Md Akhtar Iqbal said that 250 projects are slated to be showcased at the science fair. More than 30 schools and colleges are participating this year. The participants presented models for extinguishing fire, producing urea fertiliser from the black smoke of brick field, earthquake warning machine, producing fuel from plastic, waste water treatment, eco-friendly brick field, bio-gas plant, bio-plastic, wind power plant, eco-friendly city etc which will be evaluated by Dhaka University professors as judges. The focus on Thursday was mainly on eco-friendly technology as two class X students from Viqarunnisa Noon School, Ashfika Rafa and Adhara Saha, presented a model on waste water treatment that can purify water that flows into rivers. Rafa told the Dhaka Tribune: “We developed this model to reduce the contamination levels of our rivers and help preserve the biodiversity of the rivers.”
The whole world is at your fingertips with access to the internet and you should take advance of that and learn as much as you can
Their model uses an eight-step process to purify waste water before it reaches the river, hence helping to keep water pollution down. Other than models, the science fair also has projects and wall magazine display, photography exhibition, quiz, extempore speech, and olympiads on astronomy, biology, bio-chemistry, chemistry and general science. The project display was divided into four categories for secondary and college groups – physics, biology, chemistry and IT. The event was inaugurated by ULAB Vice-Chancellor Professor Imran Rahman as chief guest and chaired by Lt Col Md Akhtar Iqbal, the principal of the college. Urging students to find interest in science and technology, Prof Imran Rahman said: “focus on finding global solutions to local problems and that will be your competitive edge. “The whole world is at your fingertips with access to the internet and you should take advance of that and learn as much as you can. I believe we have the talent and capacity to have a Nobel Laureate in science and technology from your generation.” The three-day long science festival will be end on Saturday.
