HC questions handcuffing hospitalised Jahangirnagar University student

Update : 29 May 2017, 04:32 PM
The High Court has asked the officer-in-charge of Ashulia police station to appear before it on Wednesday to explain why a Jahangirnagar University student was handcuffed when he was being treated at the hospital. Nazmul Hossain was among 42 students who were shown arrested in a case filed over vandalism on the campus. The bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Jahirul Haque issued the suo-moto order on Monday after the media reported on Nazmul's plight. Media reports said Nazmul fell sick when protesting against the death of two other Jahangirnagar students in road accident. Police kept him handcuffed to hospital bed after he was rushed to a local hospital. On Friday, a student of Marketing department and another of Microbiology department were killed in a road accident on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway. Students kept the road blocked before they were dispersed by police who charged batons, fired rubber bullets and tear gas. The university filed a case with Ashulia police accusing unnamed students of vandalism and harassment of two teachers. Around Saturday midnight, police detained 42 students who were protesting in front of the vice-chancellor’s residence. A Dhaka court granted them bail on Sunday. An emergency syndicate meeting decided to suspend the university's academic activities for an indefinite period and ordered students to vacate residential halls by Sunday morning.
