Allegations have been leveled against newly appointed Dhaka University acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman, accusing him of violating Dhaka University Order 1973 by appointing a new acting dean for the Social Science Faculty.
Abu Jafar Md Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, a professor of the Television, Film and Photography department made the allegation against the acting DU VC on Thursday.
In a regular Syndicate meeting held last Wednesday, Sociology professor Sadeka Halim was appointed as the new acting Dean of Social Science faculty, replacing Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan.
Former VC AAMS Arfin Siddique appointed prof Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan as the acting dean of Social Sciences Faculty on July 2 this year, as the then dean Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed went to Preparatory Retirement Leave (PRL).
According to Dhaka University Order, 1973 Section 17(2): “In the absence of the Dean, for a period not exceeding 90 days, the Vice-Chancellor shall appoint an acting Dean, who shall exercise all the powers and enjoy all the privileges of the Dean.”
Speaking about the matter, Shafiul Alam Bhiuyan told the Dhaka Tribune, “This is a clear violation of Dhaka University Order, 1973, and it has damaged the university’s reputation.
He also made allegations of nepotism against the acting VC.
On the other hand, DU acting VC prof Akhtaruzzaman told the Dhaka Tribune, “If I had enough time after taking the role of DU vice chancellor, I would have announced an election.
“Its only been a couple of weeks since my appointment, and the Syndicate made the decision to appoint Sadeka Halim as the new acting Dean.” he further added.
Several DU teachers and students, including Prof Sadeka Halim, filed a petition with the High Court on July 24 against the convening of a Senate meeting for finalising VC recommendations without nominating or electing representatives from registered graduates.
