A faction of pro-Awami League Blue Panel of Dhaka University (DU) held a human chain on campus on Sunday demanding immediate punishment of university Proctor Prof Golam Rabbani and two others over their reported assault on another teacher.
The protest was organised at the base of Aparajeyo Bangla, in front of the Arts Building.
Sociology teacher Prof AKM Jamal Uddin was allegedly physically assaulted by the university’s Proctor Prof Golam Rabbani, Pharmacy Department Chairman Prof Sitesh Chandra Bachar and Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Department’s Prof Shah Mohammad Masum during a general meeting of the panel at TSC Cafeteria on Thursday.
At Sunday’s human chain, Blue Panel Convener and Science Faculty Dean Prof Abdul Aziz said: "The dignity of the teachers took a hit through this incident. Those teachers who were involved in it have put a question mark on our dignity."
"The incident happened in front of me. I feel ashamed and sorry for this,” he added.
The brawl between the teachers took place allegedly after Sociology Department teacher Prof Jamal, a two-term Blue Panel member of the DU Senate, protested Prof Rabbani’s insulting remarks about former vice-chancellor (VC) Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique at that meeting.
According to Prof Jamal, also former international affairs secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League, Prof Rabbani and the two others had beaten him with chairs, causing bleeding from his nose.
A number of teachers who were at the meeting backed his version of the story. But Prof Rabbani denied the allegations, claiming Prof Jamal had pushed him first during the argument.
"The incumbent VC is yet to take any step on this matter. But we have full faith on him. He assured us of taking necessary action,” said Prof Abdul Aziz at Sunday’s demonstration.
Prof Jamal demanded resignation of Prof Rabbani as the DU proctor and sacking of all the teachers who allegedly attacked him.
"We will continue our demonstration step by step,” he added.
Meanwhile, another faction of Blue Panel teachers also held a human chain at 11am on Monday at Aparajeyo Bangla in protest against physical assault on Prof Rabbani.
