Nepali students in blacklisted Bangladeshi colleges uncertain about future
Over 200 Nepali students enrolled in thirty-seven Bangladeshi blacklisted medical colleges are now worried about their fate. Only 18 of the students have been fortunate enough to get transferred to medical institutions affiliated to their former colleges. The Himalayan Times (THT) reports that the blacklisted colleges are running without abiding by the criteria set by the Bangladesh authorities and some are not even registered. The information was shared by the Embassy of Nepal in Bangladesh to the Nepal Medical Council (NMC). Cautioning the students against enrolling to the blacklisted colleges, Chairman Prof Dharma Kanta Baskota told THT that the institutions are not approved by the three regulatory bodies University Grants Commission, Directorate General of Health Services and Bangladesh Medical Council. Baskota said it was each of the universities’ responsibility to transfer the affected students to otheraffiliated colleges. He also pointed out that this task is going to be difficult as each college has limited number of seats. The official letter states that the Embassy of Nepal in Bangladesh has sought information from the foreign ministry of Bangladesh but as cases concerning medical colleges are sub judice, no written information has been made available to the embassy. The letter also says that the embassy verbally mentioned that Directorate General of Health Services had stopped inspecting these medical colleges and none of the pupils passing out from there were registered by Bangladesh Medical Council. The Bangladeshi embassy in Kathmandu has no information regarding the blacklisted colleges. Sharda Moktan, public relations officer at Bangladeshi embassy in Kathmandu, said that the Nepali embassy at times blacklists colleges when students suffer and it circulates the message to NMC. However, they have not received any official letter regarding the matter. The embassy has already blacklisted Nightingale Medical College and City Medical College, Sharda advised that students do not seek admission in these two colleges.
