Comilla Medical College shut after clash between rival Chhatra League groups

The authorities of Comilla Medical College (CoMC) have shut down the institution until January 11 following the infighting at campus between two rival groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) which left 10 people injured. Two seriously injured activists--Towfik Ahmed and Irfanul Haque-- are being treated at the intensive care unit of Apollo Hospital in Dhaka and Dhaka Medical College Hospital respectively, according to police. Both of them are the fifth year students of CoMC’s 23rd batch. The residential students of the institution have been asked to leave the dormitories by Friday. According to police sources, the clash ensued at college’s Sheikh Russel dormitory around 2:30am on Friday but the incident came into public on Friday morning. The people who got injured in the clash were the followers of either Abdul Hannan or Habibur Rahman, the two former presidents of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s CoMC unit. Comilla Kotwali Model police station Officer-in-charge Abu Salam Miah told the Dhaka Tribune that the two groups of CoMC dorm locked in a scuffle on early Friday. Police brought the situation under control after being informed by the authorities. “No case has been filed in this connection yet,” Abu Salam added.
