A doctoral student of Jahangirnagar University (JU) has accused her husband, a professor of the drama and dramatics department at the same university, of moral turpitude and misconduct.
In the complaint, which was filed with the university Vice-Chancellor's office on January 17, the doctoral student of 2016-2017 education year wrote that that the professor, whom she married in 2016, sent her with a divorce notice on September 25 last year, just three days after their first son was born.
According to the complaint, which was leaked to the Dhaka Tribune, the woman, also a lecturer of Jatiya Kobi Kazi Nazrul University in Mymensingh, came in good terms with the professor, who was already married by then, while she was attending her undergraduate and master's programs at the same department.
"He[the professor] deceived [Sic] by claiming that he virtually does not have any relationship with his first wife," wrote the doctoral student in her formal complaint.
Since their marriage, the woman alleged that the professor had been trying to conceal the relationship, citing excuses like relatives of his first wife will create problems if they learned about the marriage.
The complainant also mentioned that the professor had been forcing her to abort since she conceived the child. Then after child birth, the professor's first wife and son-in-law threatened the woman and her family members to inflict harms to the complainant and her family members if she moves for any legal steps, added the complainant.
While talking to a reporter, the teacher said: “I am yet to learn in detail about the allegation. If she wrote what you are saying, I will face it legally.”
JU VC Prof Dr Farzana Islam said: “The allegations brought against that teacher will be scrutinized.”
“If there is evidence, steps will be taken as per the rules of the university,” the VC added.
