Nahid: Tough action against rule-breaking private unis
The government is left with no other option than to take legal action against the private universities who do not follow rules and regulations, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said. He made the statement while addressing the 19th convocation of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) at its Bashundhara campus in Dhaka on Sunday. "We want to ensure quality education for our children, but some private universities are not following the governments' rules and regulations. “These universities cannot run further because they are still holding illegal campuses and getting involved in irregularities and corruption to earn extra money,” the minister said. “The government has not been able to bring these private universities on the right track even after imposing pressure on them. So, we are left with no other option than to take legal action against them [private universities who are violating regulations].” The minister also said the government had approved many public and private universities and had taken steps to ensure the quality of education at these institutions. Prof Abdul Mannan, chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), said: “The universities that violate rules have to keep in mind that an individual or an institution can never be more powerful than the law of a country. “If needed, the Ministry of Education and the UGC will not hesitate to take stern action against them.” Parliament Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury also addressed the program as convocation speaker. While addressing the graduates, the speaker asked the degree holders to utilize their knowledge for the benefit of humanity. “We all have just one life, so, make it meaningful and focus only on what you desire to succeed in,” she said asking the graduates to work for the well-being of the underprivileged people. Among others, ESTCDT Chairman Abdul Hai Sarker, IUB Trustee Board Chairman Rashed Chowdhury, and IUB Vice-Chancellor Prof M Omar Rahman also spoke at the program. A total of 1,119 graduates were conferred with honours and masters degrees at the convocation. Of them, five received the Chancellor’s Gold Medals, including the valedictorian – SM Mahfuzur Rahman.
