NGOs: Teachers from ethnic communities would ensure education among ethnic children
NGOs have recommended appointing teachers from ethnic communities in every primary school to ensure inclusive primary education facilities for ethnic children. Gram Bikash Kendro (GBK) and Shapla Neer made the recommendations at a seminar titled “Journey towards dream: Inclusion of different enthnic children in main stream primary education in Dinajpur” held at Brac Centre in the city on Sunday. The organizations also recommended special incentives and stipends from the government for these communities to elevate the lives of the ethnic children as well as their parents. Speaking as the chief guest, Advocate Mostafizur Rahman, Minister for Primary and Mass Education, said the government may provide an ethnic teacher in every union but not every school as the economic capacity of the government is not that strong. He said: “To make the learning process of the ethnic children more effective and successful, the government just published grade one books in five ethnic languages.” “Not only the government but also non-government organizations and people from the local communities should come together to implement all of these initiatives,” he urged. Through different initiatives of these projects, the organization is trying to ensure inclusive primary education facilities in favor of ethnic children by creating ethnic child-friendly environment in 14 targeted primary schools in Dinazpur sadar upazila. Meanwhile, to make these projects more successful, the organization provided a Community Mobilizer (CM) in every primary class to support these ethnic children so that the ethnic children can easily adapt to the mainstream education system. According to a report conducted by the project, the lack of ethnic teachers in these schools to make ethnic children confident and enthusiastic about mainstream primary education is causing the number of dropouts and un-enrolled ethnic students to rise in these areas. “The ethnic students are still facing discrimination at their educational institutions,” said Rabindranath Saren, president of Jatiya Adivasi Parishad while sharing his experience at the program. GBK in association with Shapla Neer has been implementing different projects on ethnic children development from 2012 till now.
