First ever college level robotics contest kicks off on March 21

The first ever robotics contest for college students will begin in Dhaka on March 21.

The two-day long event has been organized by Venturas Ltd, a Japanese education technology company, in collaboration with the ICT Ministry and Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) on the campus of United International University (UIU) in the Badda area of the capital.

11 groups from different universities, each consisting of five students, will take part in the competition.

The first day will consist of a workshop on steps to compose a robot, and the final competition will take place on the concluding day on March 22.

Yoriko Ueda, founder and CEO of Venturas Ltd, said in a press conference that the initiative was taken to teach Bangladeshi students how to compose a robot that can automatically recognize lines and control its own direction by following the given lines.

She added that another main objective of the event is to familiarize Bangladeshi students with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).

"The curriculum, components, and materials needed for the competition will be provided from Japan," said Ueda.

The parent company of Venturas in Japan has already organized similar kinds of programs in countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

Nishat Majumder, the first Bangladeshi woman to scale Mount Everest, will give a motivational speech on achieving success by conquering fear.

Assistant Prof Abu Shafin Md Mahdee Jameel of UIU said that that the educational curriculum in Bangladesh is focused more on theory than on application, hence students have a tough time adapting to practical learning systems in labs.

"If Bangladesh can get robotics knowledge from Japan, one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, it will take us ahead," said Abu Shafin.

The winner of the contest will receive Tk1 lakh as prize money, while the runner-up will get an ambassador medal. The second runner-up will get a chance to join the Grameenphone accelerator program, a four-month long program that empowers tech startups with necessary resources.
