‘TC terror’ at Willes Little Flower School and College
Willes Little Flower School and College of Dhaka has recently given forced transfer certificates (TC) to nine students. The school authorities have said that they will keep running the “correction campaign” to ensure discipline within the school. The authorities have also said that they might expel several more students if they break the rules. Students and guardians are gravely concerned over the matter. Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) of Bangladesh has said that if the students and guardians file official complaint against the school, they will take action against the school authority. The institution’s Principal Abul Hossain said: “We expelled two students on April 23 and seven more on April 25. “This is a correction campaign to maintain the image of the school. We want the school to be rid of troublemakers.” Regarding the rules that the expelled students have broken, the principal said: “A ninth grader intentionally broke a CCTV camera. Another female student of ninth grade was talking to a boy on the phone outside the school. Two English version students of the seventh grade were buying and selling knives. Another two English version students of the eighth grade were found carrying electric cigarettes. Another three students of the seventh, eighth and tenth grade were fighting over complications regarding seniority during lunch hour. One of them was found carrying a knife. They were all expelled.”

Prof Dr Md Abdul Mannan, director at DSHE, said: “Teachers often take shortcuts and simply expel students when they break the rules. It is the responsibility of the teachers to ensure that the students learn from their mistakes. “Young people need to be given the chance to correct themselves. If they are not nurtured properly, they could become psychologically unstable. Sudden TCs like this affect them severely. It also affects their family and social life negatively.” Dr Mannan also said that he did not know why the Willes Little Flower authority expelled the students. “If the guardians file complaints, we will take necessary measures against the institution.” When asked about the possible mental and emotional state of students, Assistant Professor of the Department of Clinical Psychology at University of Dhaka, S M Abul Kalam Azad said: “When a child is responsible for a mishap, it is not called a crime. It is considered to be a mistake that they should be given the chance to correct. “Teachers and guardians are responsible for handling these matters and teaching them morals and ethics. Instead of doing that, if the teachers immediately expel them from school, the students feel extreme psychological pressure. Young people do not have the ability to cope with stress the way older, more experienced people do.” This article was first published on banglatribune.com
