SSC result: Pass rates take a dip
The success rate of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and its equivalent examinations has fallen again, despite the widespread leak of question papers during the exams. The exams started on February 1 and ended on March 8. About 77.77% students among around two million candidates passed this year, which is 2.58% lower than 2017 when 80.35% passed. And in 2016, a whopping 90% of examinees passed. Despite the decrease in overall pass rates, the number of GPA-5 achievers has increased from 104,761 to 110,629. The pass rate was higher among girls than boys. While 78.85% of 1,004,254 girls passed, 76.71% of 1,022,320 boys passed. 55,701 boys scored GPA-5, as did 54,928 girls. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid presented a copy of the results to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Gonobhaban on Sunday morning. The prime minister congratulated the candidates who passed and encouraged those who failed. PM Hasina addressed the parents, saying: “We should not reprimand those who failed. They need to be encouraged so that they can perform better in the future.”

Rajshahi best, Sylhet worst among eight boards

Rajshahi produced the best results with an 86.07% pass rate, despite a 4% fall from 90.7% from 2017. It can also boast having 429 institutions where not a single student failed. Sylhet scored the lowest among eight education boards with 70.42%. In a startling comeback, 80.4% of Comilla Education Board students passed. Last year, there was only a 59.03% pass rate in the Comilla board. The Barisal Board had a 77.11% pass rate while the Jessore Board and Dinajpur Board had 76.64% and 77.62% respectively. The rate was 75.5% in the Chittagong Board. The Dhaka Board showed a drop in performance as only 41,585 students scored GPA-5, down from nearly 50,000 in 2017.

Madrasa and technical pass rates down

Bangladesh Madrasah Education Board had a 70.89% pass rate, down from 76.2% last year. Among them, there were 3,371 GPA-5 students. On the other hand, Bangladesh Technical Education Board also saw a drop in pass rates by 6.73%. 4,413 students achieved GPA-5 among the 71.96% students who passed. The results overseas are quite positive as in eight exam centres overseas, 422 among 450 students passed. But only 28 scored GPA-5.

Among the students who did not achieve satisfactory results, six students tried to ingest poison to kill themselves while two more tried to hang themselves. All eight were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where one student died of poisoning. Medical authorities said the other seven were in critical condition. Seven students attempted suicide in Tangail. Six of them consumed various types of toxic substances and the seventh drank an antiseptic liquid. They have been admitted to Tangail General Hospital and are being monitored.   Liakat Ali Badal from Rangpur and Abdullah Al Numan from Tangail contributed to this report
