Dhaka University (DU) authorities on Sunday suspended three students and Bangladesh Chhatra League activists a day after they assaulted two other students who were reportedly holding hands.

Proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani told the Dhaka Tribune: "They have been suspended from all academic activities following primary investigation."

The investigation was conducted after the victim students filed a written complaint. Officials said more actions will follow after examining the CCTV camera footages.

The suspended trio was – Women and Gender Studies Department student Sifat Ullah, an activist of Chhatra League’s Mastarda Surja Sen Hall unit, Institute of Education and Research (IER) student Md Al Imran, an executive committee member of the same unit, and Institute of Modern Language student Mahmudur Rahman.

All of them were first-year students. Witnesses had also identified another attacker as IER student Polash, who is yet to face action.

According to witnesses and the victims, Economics Department students Asaduzzaman and Lena were standing at Mall Chattar in front of the DU Administration Building, adjacent to Surja Sen Hall, while holding hands around 5pm on Saturday.

A group of 10-12 students suddenly surrounded them and demanded that they show their student identity cards.

The victims said the students attacked them even after they showed their ID cards. Asaduzzaman was allegedly beaten up with a cricket stump, and Lena was assaulted after she tried to protect him.

According to witnesses, the Chhatra League activists started beating them when Asaduzzaman asked why they were questioning them.

Afterwards, the attackers entered the hall. Both victims, adamant to leave quietly after the unreasonable assault, followed them asking why they were beaten, but ended up being assaulted a second time.

Later in the day, Lena submitted a written complaint to the proctor, following Surja Sen Hall Provost Prof Maksud Kamal’s advice.

Talking to the Dhaka Tribune, Lena said: “Why were we attacked inside the campus of our university, without any reason? Who will ensure our safety here?”

Commenting on the matter, Prof Kamal later said: “A three-member probe committee has been formed by the university authorities, and it will submit a report within seven days. We will judge the incident based on the report.

“The culprits will also be identified through CCTV footages of the hall.”

However, Chhatra League’s Surja Sen hall unit President Golam Sarwar claimed that their activists had questioned the identities of those two students after finding them in an “objectionable state,” and that led to a scuffle.
