President: Stay alert to prevent conspiracies against Ducsu polls

His makes the call while addressing the 51st Convocation of Dhaka University

President Abdul Hamid asked students of Dhaka University (DU) to remain alert to prevent vested quarters from hatching conspiracies to hinder the process of the Ducsu election.

Addressing the university’s 51st convocation on Saturday, he said: “The Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) polls will facilitate to hold elections in other educational institutes of Bangladesh in the days to come.”

He urged the political parties to ensure utmost professionalism and give space to the student politicians to bring qualitative changes in the politics of the country.

Referring to the diploma and evening courses in the public universities, President Hamid urged university authorities to re-think if the practice of giving degrees in the name of diploma and evening courses was affecting the normal academic atmosphere and tradition of the universities.

The university authorities must consider the greater interest of the students and give priority to the interest of the general students, he said.

He asked all concerned to take necessary steps for Dhaka University’s overall development in the greater national interest.

While addressing the ceremony, DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Akhtaruzzaman said: “Due to many reasons, Ducsu was dysfunctional for nearly three decades. 

He said: “A voter list is being prepared for the polls and other activities are also going on as the university authorities are determined to hold the much awaited election.”

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Nasreen Ahmad and deans of different faculties, cabinet members, prime minister’s adviser, members of parliament, heads of diplomatic missions, former and incumbent vice-chancellors of different universities, national professors, DU syndicate and senate members, among others, were also present on the occasion.

A total of 21,111 graduates took part in the convocation, the biggest in the history of the Dhaka University. About 81 researchers were conferred with the Doctor of Philosophy degree while 27 were awarded the Master of Philosophy degree. Of them, 96 teachers and students received gold medals from the president.

The convocation ceremony was also screened simultaneously at two extended venues - Eden Mohila College and Dhaka College - where 4,000 graduates of the seven affiliated colleges with the Dhaka University participated for the first time.
