Students of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College celebrate their SSC results at school campus on Monday, May 6, 2019 Rajib Dhar/Dhaka Tribune

This year 2,187,815 students-1,068,527 boys and 1,059,288 girls- sat for the 2019 SSC and equivalent examinations under the country's 10 education boards

The student pass rate for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations this year is 82.20%, showing close to a 5% increase in the pass rate compared to last year.

However, the number of GPA 5 students has gone down, with only 105,594 students securing that grade in this year’s SSC exams.

This year 2,187,815 students-1,068,527 boys and 1,059,288 girls- sat for the 2019 SSC and equivalent examinations under the country's 10 education boards.

Of them, 105,594 students obtained GPA-5, which is 5000 less than in previous years. The percentage of GPA-5 achievers stands at 4.96%, down from 5.46% in 2018.

The results were announced during a ceremony at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka, where the 10 respective board chairmen handed the results to education minister Dr Dipu Moni.

Usually Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announces the results.   However, this time the education minister announced the results since the PM is currently overseas.

Madrasa board performed extraordinarily well

Students from madrasas and technical education students have performed exceptionally well in scoring a GPA 5 in their SSC and equivalent exams this year.

Both the pass rate and the number of GPA 5 recipients rose notably for madrasa students who sat for the Dakhil exams this year.

The pass rate at madrasas is 83.03% this year, where it was 70.89% a year ago, and a total of 6,287 students scored GPA 5, compared to 3,371 students in 2018.

A total of 72.24% students under the Bangladesh Technical Education Board passed their SSC (vocational) exams this year. The rate was 71.96% in 2018.

Of a total of 126,383 vocational students, 91,298 of them passed this year, and a total of 4,751 students or 3.76% of them scored GPA 5, while 4,413 did so a year ago.

Rajshahi continues at top in pass rate, Dhaka top among GPA-5 scorers

In the eight general educations boards, students of the Rajshahi Education Board once again performed  best in their SSC exams with a 91.64% pass rate, while Dhaka students had the highest number of GPA-5 scorers.

Last year, Rahshahi students had an 86.07% pass rate.

The Sylhet education board has the lowest pass rate at 70.83%. It is 79.62% for Dhaka, 87.16% in Comilla, 77.41% in Barisal, 90.88% in Jessore, 78.11% in Chittagong, and 84.10% for the Dinajpur education board.

29,687 students from the Dhaka Education Board achieved the highest Grade Point Average of 5 (GPA-5).

However, the number is significantly less than a year ago. Last year, 41,585 students scored GPA-5 from the Dhaka board.

The number of GPA-5 recipients is also lowest in the Sylhet education board with only 2757 students who got a GPA-5. It is 22,795 in Rajshahi, 8764 in Comilla, 9948 in Jessore, 7393 in Chittagong, 4189 in Barisal, and 9023 in the Dinajpur education board.

Girls outshine boys

Female students have shown better results—in both pass rate and scoring a GPA 5—in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations this year.

The female student pass rate is 83.28%; while it is 81.13% for boys, the official results show.

This year, the combined pass rate is 82.20% for the SSC and equivalent examinations in all ten general education, madrasa, and vocational boards.

A total of 53,484 female students secured GPA 5 and 52,110 boys scored the same. A total of 882,224 female students passed the exams with an 83.28% success rate. Some 866,941 male students passed the exams with an 81.13% success rate.

As usual, students from the science group showed the best pass rate and GPA-5numbers.

The pass rate for science students stands at 94.72%, followed by 83.03% from business studies, and only 74.32% from the humanities groups.

Of a total of 94,556 students securing GPA-5 under eight general education boards, about 98% are from a science background while it is less than 1% for students of both business studies and the humanities.

Like the previous year, the Education Ministry did not classify schools on the basis of merit this year. The best institution in the country in terms of pass rate and GPA 5 achievers, was not mentioned in the published SSC results.

2583 institutions saw 100% pass rate, no pass rate in 107 schools

Only 2,583 institutions had the privilege of having every single SSC or equivalent examinee pass. It was 1,574 a year ago.

On the other hand, not a single student passed from 107 institutions, compared to a 109 in 2018.

Abroad, 423 students took the tests at eight examination centers this year. Of them, 389 students passed the exams,  putting their group’s pass rate at 91.96%. Of the examinees abroad, 56 students got a GPA-5. Three institutions abroad had zero failing students.
