Number of colleges with 100% pass rate more than doubled

This year’s results of the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations, published yesterday, show improvement compared to last year’s results, both in terms of overall pass rates and the number of GPA 5 scorers.

Girls outperformed boys for the fifth consecutive year, while more boys scored GPA 5 than girls this year.

A total of 1,336,629 students from 9,081 educational institutions appeared in the examinations under 10 education boards – eight higher secondary boards, one madrasa board and one technical education board – across Bangladesh. Among them, 703,000 were male and 633,629 were female examinees.

This year’s overall pass rate is 73.93%, which was 66.64% in 2018. Among the students, 71.67% of the male – 503,828 – and 76.44% of the female – 484,344 – examinees passed the exams.

Around 3.54% of the successful students scored GPA 5; the total number of GPA 5 achievers this year is 47,286 – 24,576 boys and 22,710 girls. The number of GPA 5 scorers was 29,262 in 2018.

Teachers said this year’s results were better as students did comparatively better in English. The Ministry of Education believes that some major initiatives on its part, such as training for the teachers, helped with the students’ improved performance.

Students under the Bangladesh Madrasa Education Board did better than last year as well, with 76,281 students passing the examinations at 88.56% pass rate. In 2018, their pass rate was 78.67%.

The Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB) saw a 82.62% pass rate, with 3,238 of their students scoring GPA 5.

The number of colleges that achieved a 100% pass rate has more than doubled this year. This year, 909 colleges saw a 100% pass rate, while the number was 400 in 2018, and 532 in 2017. The number of institutions with 0% pass rate dropped to 41 this year, from 55 in 2018 and 72 in 2017.

‘Satisfactory results’

Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni said the ministry was satisfied over this year’s HSC and equivalent exam results.

“We have been able to prevent question paper leak and cheating by students at exam halls this year. There was no confusion, and no rumours over the examinations,” she told reporters at her office in the ministry.

In reply to a question, the education minister said they did not have any plan to introduce a re-evaluation system, but the students can apply for a scrutinization of their scores on their answer scripts.

“We have found that the number of errors that teachers made while adding up the final marks on the scripts before, has gone down,” she added.

She urged teachers to be more engaging and guardians to be more vigilant about the students’ activities, health and studies in order to get better performance out of them.

“Students these days are distracted by digital devices and social media. Their use of these technologies should be monitored.”

Earlier in the morning, as the education minister handed the results over to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban, the premier said this year’s results were sufficiently acceptable.

Hoping for better results in future, the prime minister said: "I think if the students make proper efforts, their results will be better."

She said she believed that education is the key to building a prosperous and developed nation free from hunger and poverty.

The prime minister congratulated the successful students and advised the unsuccessful examinees not to be disheartened. “You will get the chance to do better next time,” she added.

The prime minister thanked teachers and everyone related to the publishing of the results within the stipulated time.

Girls continue to outshine boys

Girls did better than boys in the HSC and equivalent examinations for the fifth year in a row.

This year, 76.44% of the female students who sat the HSC and equivalent examinations have passed, while the pass rate among the male students is 71.67%.

In 2018, the success rate among girls was 69.72%, while the boys’ pass rate was 63.88%. In 2017, the success rate for girls was 70.43% and 68.61% for boys. On an average, 73.93% of examinees passed examinations under 10 education boards of the country.

Chittagong sees a drop in pass rate

The number of GPA 5 achievers went up under the jurisdiction of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Chittagong, but the average pass rate dropped slightly compared to the previous year’s results.

A total of 99,796 students from 260 colleges appeared in the HSC examinations in Chittagong this year, of which 62.19% passed the public examinations and 2,860 scored GPA 5. In 2018, a total of 1,613 students obtained GPA 5, but the pass rate was 62.73%.

Among this year’s GPA 5 achievers, 1,448 are boys and 1,412 are girls. The pass rate for boys stand at 65.11%, and 59.21% of the girls succeeded in the exams. Around 75.32% students passed in Chittagong city, while 55.61% passed in the Chittagong district.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Mohammad Mahbub Hasan, controller of examinations at the Chittagong education board, said the pass rate had dropped this year because the examinees performed poorly in English and ICT.
