Educational institutions are set to stay closed until April 4, after the government announced general holidays for 10 days from March 26 in order to limit the spread of Covid-19 (coronavirus).

The Education Ministry had already closed schools, colleges and universities from March 18-31 due to the global pandemic, and postponed the HSC exams scheduled to start on April 1 on Sunday.

“Educational institutions usually stay closed on general holidays, which means they will be closed [until Apr 4],” Education Ministry Secondary and Higher Education Division Secretary Mahbub Hossain said on Monday.

Earlier on Monday, Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam announced the decision to keep all government and private offices and courts shut from Mar 26 to April 4 due to the coronavirus outbreak, which has infected at least 33 people and killed three.

Emergency services will continue to operate through the general holiday, but public transport will be limited.

Bangladesh Bank said banks would stay open but their operation will be scaled back to reduce the risk of worsening the outbreak.
