Covid-19-stricken 2020 HSC, equivalent exams see 100% pass rate

A total of 161,807 students have achieved GPA-5

The results of last year’s Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations have seen a 100% pass rate, as the government published them without holding the tests because of the Covid-19 pandemic. 

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina officially announced the results on Saturday. She had joined the results handover ceremony, held at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka, via videoconference from the Ganabhaban.

A total of 1,145,329 students had registered last year and passed the HSC exams from nine general education boards, 88,302 passed Alim from the Madrasa Board, and 133,746 cleared the exams from the Technical Education Board.

At the International Mother Language Institute ceremony, Education Minister Dipu Moni received the results from the chiefs of the 11 education boards.

“A total of 161,807 students have achieved GPA-5, and all of 1,367,377 examinees have passed in the examinations, ” the minister told a press conference there afterwards.

The government strongly urged students not to gather at the educational institutions or exam centres to pick up the results.

Last year's HSC and its equivalent examinations were cancelled because of the pandemic, which has so far killed over 8,000 people across Bangladesh.

Last week, the parliament passed three amended bills, paving the path for publishing the HSC results without holding the tests.

The HSC batch of 2020 is the first batch of students who will get the certificates without taking the as it is the first time in the history of Bangladesh that a public examination has been cancelled.
