The syllabuses will also be available on the NCTB website and at all relevant educational institutions

Keeping in mind that students can get at most four months to prepare for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC), Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations this year, the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) has curtailed syllabuses.

They will be submitted to the Education Ministry on Thursday. On Friday, the ministry is set to publish the syllabuses and they will also be available on the NCTB website and at all relevant educational institutions.

This comes in line with Education Minister Dipu Moni's recent instruction to the NCTB for shortening the syllabuses.

The government plans to hold the SSC and equivalent examinations in June, and HSC and equivalent tests between July and August this year, once the shortened syllabuses are finalized.

When contacted, NCTB Chairman Prof Narayan Chandra Saha said the syllabuses as ordered by the ministry had been finalized.

"Experts and teachers are reviewing the shortened syllabuses, which will be submitted to the ministry on Thursday," he said.

“As all kinds of educational institutions have remained closed, the ministry wants to ease the burden on students and conduct the exams by July or August. The syllabuses for SSC and HSC exams have been rearranged considering this time,” he maintained.

Referring to the level of how much the syllabus had been cut short, the NCTB chairman said: "We did modify the syllabuses on the basis of percentages.

"But we have an instruction for the institutions concerned and teachers to impart lessons of a few fixed contents or chapters," he added.

Reconfirming the development, the Inter-board Coordination Subcommittee's Exam Controller SM Amirul Islam said the concise syllabuses that could be covered in three months would be available at the NCTB website and educational institutes on Friday.

What the syllabuses contain

Aiming to curtail the syllabuses, a team was formed comprising two senior teachers and an expert from the NCTB for each subject. But the teams were supervised by another NCTB expert team.

According to the NCTB, out of the total 36 textbooks of class X and XI, the subjects that had already been completed in the ninth grade but are similar to the subjects of tenth grade had been omitted.

Similarly, most contents for the eleventh grade that matched those meant for class XII had been omitted.

However, the short syllabuses have been prepared in light of the subjects that were associated with the 11th class, as well as the subjects that were very important to learn and know at the ninth-tenth level.

Though various topics were omitted from the theoretical subjects, not much was omitted from the practical subjects.

After the reopening of the educational institutions, a short syllabus will be taught and a selection test will be taken by the institutions concerned.

These contents include Physics, Chemistry, Accounting, Agriculture, General science, Fine Arts, Bangla 1st Paper, Bangla 2nd Paper, Bangladesh and World Identity, Biology, Buddhism, Business Entrepreneurship, Christianity, Economics, English 1st Paper, English 2nd Paper, Banking and Finance, Geography and Environment, Higher Mathematics, Hinduism, History, Home Science, ICT, Islam, and Ideology, Mathematics, etc.
