UGC approves Tk10,000cr budget for 49 public universities

Dhaka University receives the highest allocation, and Habiganj Agricultural University the lowest

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved a budget of Tk10,032.81 crore for the country's 49 public universities for the 2021-22 fiscal year.

Of the amount, the revenue budget is Tk5,875.81 crore and the development budget is Tk4,157 crore for various projects.

The budget was approved at the 160th full commission meeting of the UGC on Thursday, held online and chaired by UGC Chairman Prof Kazi Shahidullah.

The budget was presented by UGC Secretary Ferdous Zaman.

Compared to last fiscal year’s budget for public universities, the budget for the 2021-22 fiscal year has increased by about Tk1,548 crore.

Among the public universities, Dhaka University received the highest allocation, while Habiganj Agricultural University got the lowest.

A total of Tk100.74 crore has been allocated in the main budget for research purposes at the public universities -- a Tk34 crore increase from the previous fiscal year. 

Furthermore, the university apex body approved a budget of Tk61.36 crore for itself for the 2021-22 fiscal year -- a drop from last fiscal's Tk72.95 crore.

Speaking regarding more allocation in the research sector for the universities, the UGC chairman said: "Bangladesh is now a developing country. The government is committed to making Bangladesh one of the developed countries by 2041. 

"If we want to take the country forward by continuing the trend of development, we have to create new knowledge through quality education and research. To meet this goal, UGC has significantly increased the budget of the country’s public universities for research activities."

Among others, UGC member Prof Dil Afroza Begum, Prof Sajjad Hossain, Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University Prof Md Harun-ur-Rashid Askari, Vice-Chancellor of Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Prof Gautam Buddha Das, Vice-Chancellor (Acting) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University of Science and Technology Prof Md Shahjahan, Dean of Khulna University’s Law School Prof Md Waliul Hasan, Prof Md Abdul Baset from Sylhet Agricultural University’s Department of Livestock Production and Management, Prof Md Julhas Uddin from Bangladesh Textile University’s Department of Wet Process Engineering, member of Planning Commission (Socio-Economic Infrastructure), secretary of Department of Secondary and Higher Education, secretary of Ministry of Education, and additional secretary of Ministry of Finance were also present at the meeting.
