Korean envoy visits IUB campus to strengthen bi-lateral ties

The discussion with Ambassador Lee primarily focused on establishing a Korean Language Centre at IUB

South Korea Ambassador to Bangladesh Lee Jang-keun has visited Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) campus to forge new partnerships based on the historical relationship with the institution. 

Ambassador Lee met IUB Vice-Chancellor Tanweer Hasan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan and Head of the Department of Media and Communication and Korean culture expert Prof Zakir Hossain Rajuto on June 17 and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations in terms of academic and cultural collaboration.

The discussion with Ambassador Lee primarily focused on establishing a Korean Language Centre at IUB with a Korean native instructor, said a press release.

The discussion also focused on establishing a Korean Studies Center at IUB with the objective to develop scholarly research as well as academic and cultural exchanges.

Vice-Chancellor Tanweer Hasan presented IUB’s vision and mission to Ambassador Lee and expressed his keen interest to strengthen the relationship between IUB and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea. 

After the meeting, a cultural program was organized by the Department of Media and Communication and the IUB K-Club (Korean Club) for the Ambassador.

Professor Dr Taiabur Rahman, Dean, School of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences, Professor Zakir Hossain Raju, Raiyana Rahman, Lecturer of the Department of Media and Communication and the coordinator of IUB K-Club attended the cultural program.

Members of the IUB K-Club made a small presentation highlighting the Korean cultural and educational activities that take place at IUB, it said.

The presentation focused on how IUB organizes Korean Festivals annually along with other Korean cultural events and also on how Professor Zakir Hossain Raju developed the unique course titled Korean Cinema and Society at IUB back in 2015.

This undergraduate course examines South Korean society, culture, and modernity in relation to its cinema and popular culture.

Ambassador Lee thanked IUB and Professor Raju for playing such a vital role in promoting Korean Studies in Bangladesh.

During his campus tour, Ambassador Lee visited IUB’s spacious Auditorium, Multipurpose Gallery, well-equipped Broadcast Journalism Lab and the Audio Visual Post Production Lab of the Media and the Communication Department.
