The home minister has assured them of resuming classes soon

A group of Qawmi madrasa leaders called on Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Wednesday again with their demand to reopen the Qawmi madrasas across the country.

Eight members of the Qawmi Madrasa Education Board of Bangladesh, or Al-Haiatul Ulya Lil-Jamiatil Qawmia Bangladesh, met with the minister at his office in the secretariat at noon, reports Bangla Tribune.

The delegation, led by Maulana Mahmudul Hasan, said the minister assured them of reopening the madrasas soon, according to a media statement.

It said that Maktab and Hefzkhana will be opened in the first phase and the rest of the classes will be opened in the next phases.

Following a surge in Covid-19 cases and deaths, the government had suspended in-person academic activities in all educational institutions across the country in March last year.

The madrasas resumed operations in August last year – taking classes, holding exams with residential facilities. But the government shut them down again on April 6 this year after Covid-19 cases and deaths saw an alarming spike.

Several Qawmi madrasas, however, were still continuing to hold classes and examinations despite the government directive.

Following the shutdown, leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam and Qawmi madrasa boards met with the home minister several times and urged him to resume academic activities.

Several Islamic scholars also demanded the reopening of all the Qawmi madrasas in the country on humanitarian grounds.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Dipu Moni on Tuesday said educational institutions across the country will likely be reopened in phases as the Covid-19 infection rate continues to drop.

“The infection rate is gradually dropping. If it continues, we can reopen the education institutes step by step,” she said.

However, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Zakir Hossain said that schools would be opened after getting clearance from the government higher-ups.

“We can’t reopen the schools all of a sudden. We have taken all-out preparations and if the prime minister orders us today, we are prepared to reopen the schools from tomorrow,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

The same day, the authorities had issued guidelines as part of preparations to reopen the educational institutions. The latest extension to their closures is set to continue till August 31.

The government reopened offices and shops after the nationwide strict lockdown, aimed at curbing Covid-19 cases and deaths, was lifted on August 11.

Bangladesh has seen a rapid drop in the Covid-19 infection rate recently, giving the authorities hope.
