The Developing Midwives Project (DMP) of BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health has witnessed a 100% pass rate of all the students who sat to acquire their formal licenses to become registered midwives on September 4.

“Amidst a pandemic, my girls ensured a 100% pass rate of the comprehensive (license) examination, organized by Bangladesh Nursing and Midwifery Council (BNMC),” said Dr Sharmina Rahman, assistant director (in-charge) of the DMP.

The fifth batch of midwifery course comprised a total of 231 students who sat for the license exam, said a media release.

They competed against students from 42 public and 58 private institutes across the country.

The project has seven academic sites across the country.

Dr Sharmina said the students participated in online classes throughout the pandemic to continue their course work.

Students of each batch were split into groups of 10-12 and assigned an individual group teacher, who was responsible to revise lessons that students learnt on a daily basis, she added.

“In comparison to physical revision classes, the frequency of online revision classes had tripled. Group teachers were responsible to provide constant encouragement, support and also assess students on a regular basis to ensure no student was falling back in class,” Dr Sharmina added.

Sumi, one of the students in the course, said her studies were never disrupted during the lockdown.

“Online classes started right away and this new normal was tough to adjust to sometimes, due to power outages and mobile network issues. However, we studied and sat for weekly and monthly exams rigorously,” Sumi added.

Another student, Dolon, said: ““I am grateful for my experience at the Brac Developing Midwives Project. I am very proud to be a midwife by profession now.”
