Stressing on a free, fair, participatory and transparent election, US ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat yesterday said a credible election must have a credible opposition.
The ambassador made the comment while addressing journalists after a meeting with Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed after a meeting with him at his secretariat office on Monday.
“Elections that are free, fair, participatory and transparent are key to any democracy’s wellbeing,” said Bernicat.
“In order for an election to be as credible as possible, every party has to be able to participate fully, meaning holding rallies and meetings, which off course by definition must be peaceful,” she said.
“Credible election must have a credible opposition in order to be further credible. Along with that the ability for Bangladeshi citizens to be able to speak and to enjoy freedom of speech, press and assembling [are also necessary],” said the US ambassador.
“We do not want to hold the election keeping anyone aside. if any party does not want to participate in the election, it is their decision,” said Tofail Ahmed.
By not participating in the election of 2014, the BNP has been able to realize its wrong decision. That is why they have joined Dr Kamal Hossain’s alliance, he said.
“I hope all the parties will participate in the next election,” he added.
